Have you ever seen a lion symbolizing Saint Mark and wondered why? I did a little exploring on the topic and would like to share a few points with you. Christian tradition has connected the four evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) with the four “living creature that surround God’s throne” as described in Revelation. Let’s not confuse the four living creatures with other “beasts” in the Book of Revelation.
Probing a little deeper, we learn that St. Mark wrote a Gospel to a church in Rome, one that was suffering martyrdom regularly. Now as we all know, lions are fearless. St. Mark wrote with a fearless faith in Jesus. Hence, his symbol is that of the lion.
Interestingly, Saint Mark is the patron saint for attorneys (I guess we could say that some attorneys have a loud roar). So, let us ask this valiant saint to plead our case and petition for mercy before Almighty God.
