Isodore of Seville

Saint Isidore of Seville

On April 4, we commemorate Saint Isidore Archbishop of Seville, and a Doctor of the Church. I recently learned that St. Isidore wrote an encyclopedia that was used as a textbook for nine centuries–no wonder he is often called “The Schoolmaster of the Middle Ages.”

Although St. Isidore was a brilliant man, he valued knowledge of God before knowledge of things. This holy man is still teaching us with these insightful words:

Eternal happiness does not come about as a consequence of the knowledge of things, nor is it blessed to know many things, but it is a great thing to live in a blessed manner.

It profits one nothing to have all understanding but be ignorant of God, and nothing counts against those who know God but are ignorant of the world.

Saint Isidore, pray for us.
