This beautiful painting by the 17th century German artist, Jürgen Ovens, captures the essence of today’s feast day, the Presentation of the Lord. In the painting, the Christ Child is illuminated with His divine persona. This light, born in a dark winter night, has begun to shine and spread its warm glow everywhere.
It is fitting that we observe this event in Our Lord’s life midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. Our days are gradually growing longer and the earth is slowly becoming warmer. In fact, there are tiny signs of new life sprouting in the small corners in our gardens.
The Light of the World will show many things; it will expose our deepest secrets and uncover what is hidden. The inner clutter that dwells in our hearts – insecurities, fears, temptations, sin, unkindness, arrogance – all those qualities that separate us from God and our neighbor. Many of these hidden things must come into our vision and understanding. If they remain hidden, we will never be able to rid ourselves of these flaws and sins. And, what is hidden will bar us from enjoying the warmth of Christ’s Light. The approaching season of Lent will provide us with 40 days to look at what the Christ Child has revealed to us.
The Presentation of the Lord forces us to leave the Christ Child in His Father’s temple and turn our sights to His public ministry. Perhaps this prayer for Guidance and Wisdom will help us search for Christ’s Light in the coming days of Lent.
All powerful Father, you sent your Son Jesus Christ to bring the new light of salvation to the world. May He enlighten us with his radiance, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
