Saint James the Great is the brother of St. John the Evangelist and son of Zebedee and Salome. When Our Lord Jesus called Saints James and John, they left their father and boat behind without hesitation or discussion.
This Apostle wrote these words that have always resonated with me:
We use it (the tongue) to bless the Lord and Father, but we also use it to curse people who are made in God’s image: the blessing and curse come out of the same mouth. – St. James 3:9-10
Don’t you think that this is a very powerful message? We raise our voices in prayer, praise and worship of God. Then, we turn around and say hurtful or mean things about or to a fellow human being. Let’s keep these words, written by a friend of Jesus, in our hearts. So, that next time we are tempted to use our tongues to utter an unkind word, let’s call on St. James and pray:
Saint James,Pray for us that we may be willing to leave everything to follow Jesus as you did. Help us to become special friends of Jesus as you were.
Amen
.
