At yesterday’s Mass, we heard how the Magi ended their search and found the Infant Christ. Matthew continues by telling us:
When they had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, ‘Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him.’
Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt. (Matthew 2:13-14)
As I was boxing my Christmas decorations, I found myself pondering on the worry, fear, tension and stress that Our Lady and St. Joseph experienced as they fled in the night to escape Herod’s soldiers. Then, I quickly I reflected on their courage and strength. They simply trusted and obeyed God’s will.
As the days of 2012 unfold, let us keep these words from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton close to our hearts:
The first end I propose in our daily work is to do the will of God; secondly, to do it in the manner he wills it; and thirdly to do it because it is his will.
